Antique sailors and traders were transporting goods from south Greek colonies to Illyrians tribes. When they come to Lastovo, they name it Ladesta or Ladeston. Latter Romans rename it to Ladestris and Narentines, that came after Romans, took the roman root Lasta and added suffix ‘–ovo’ – and that is how the name of Lastovo was created.

Free from poisonous snakes
No Fear. It is important to point out to all the visitors of the island that Lastovo is free from dangerous and poisonous animals. This includes even poisonous spiders, such as well-known “black widow” which is usually a common habitant of rocky coasts. If you do see a snake, do not worry since the only snakes on the island are non-poisonous “grass snake” (lat. Natrix natrix, can be recognized with the white spot on their head). Therefore, you can walk in beautiful grass fields and lay in the shade of peaceful Evergreens, fully relaxed and immersed in nature.
