Antique sailors and traders were transporting goods from south Greek colonies to Illyrians tribes. When they come to Lastovo, they name it Ladesta or Ladeston. Latter Romans rename it to Ladestris and Narentines, that came after Romans, took the roman root Lasta and added suffix ‘–ovo’ – and that is how the name of Lastovo was created.

The Island of Lastovo and its waters were declared a nature park of exceptional beauty and well-preserved plant and animal diversity. Preservation of such pristine nature should be responsibility all of us: both the hosts and tourists. Unfortunately many people do not follow that logic. The Lastovo Islands Nature Park team confirmed that during 20 cleaning actions they executed in 2011, they collected more than 25 tons of garbage (Marine debris).

Preservation of nature - is the responsibility of all of us 
The greatest enemies of the nature are people – especially those careless and irresponsible. They can easily destroy and pollute huge amount of nature in no time. Unfortunately, even a pearls like islands of Lastovo and the waters around it are not immune to such inappropriate behaviors.

During 2011, the Islands of Lastovo Nature Park team cleaned those bitches and bays:

  • Beach Saplun,
  • Longing in Skrivena harbor – twice
  • Kremena - three times,
  • Jurjeva ports - two times (the coast) and a submarine,
  • Sito – twice
  • Zaklopatica (submarine)
  • Zace
  • Uska bay – twice
  • Korita,
  • Bay Little Letišća,
  • U Mrčara,
  • Ponta od Kresa (Borova bay),
  • Port Ubli (offshore). Ante Lešić recorded an impressive testimony of the seabed cleaning.

Together, in all these actions, we have gathered about 25 tons of garbage.

Cleaning of the Lastovo submarine

Cleaning actions will continue this year.

In addition do such cleaning actions, it is important that all of us – tourists, sailors, hosts and fisherman take proactive role in preserving this pristine beauty. With no exception trash should be and store it in the provided bins. Sea dumping is strictly prohibited, unethical and punishable by law.
